Getting Started Guide

Learn to Sail

Recommended Course Order

Basic Sailing  →  Small Boat Sailing – Level 1  →  Keelboat Cruising 1

Sailing Course Prerequisite DiagramFor most students, the best starting point is Basic Sailing.  This is the fundamental course upon which all other sailing courses build.  Whether you have previous sailing experience, or you have never set foot on a boat, Basic Sailing will get your foot in the door and ensure you have a solid foundation on which to build new knowledge and experiences.

After Basic Sailing, we typically recommend that your next choice be Small Boat Sailing – Level 1.  This course gives you a lot of valuable on the water time which helps solidify the techniques learned in Basic Sailing, as well as introducing you to more challenging conditions and techniques.

We then recommend Keelboat Cruising 1.  This course applies the fundamental concepts learned in previous classes, and applies them to larger boats.  It also introduces you to the systems in place on typical larger vessels.

These three courses will give you a good foundation in the sport of sailing, and will give you an idea of what types of sailing interest you the most.

At any time, if you feel unsure about any topics covered, or wish to get more time in a boat, you can repeat any of our courses, or you can sign-up for private or semi-private sailing lessons.  Both of those options can be used to learn new material, reinforce previously learned material, or simply get some time in the boats.  Our instructors will be glad to help!

If you have any questions about our recommended path, or would like a more personalized recommendation, talk to your instructor or contact us, and we will do our utmost to help you.
