For the remainder of this year, the Leo Robbins Community Sailing Center’s facilities dock will be undergoing repair and maintenance, and we will not be open to the public.
Classes will resume, as before, in January 2014. Any updates on class statuses will be posted here, as well as on our Facebook page. If you have any questions, you can contact us, and we will gladly answer them as best we can. Details of the facility maintenance are below.
Once repairs are completed, we hope you’ll stop by and check out the changes!
2011 Dock Damage
On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. This earthquake created a tsunami which devastated large portions of Japan. The next day, along certain portions of the United States west coast, there were significant water surges, some reaching up to 8 feet in height. Details can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami.
The Ventura Harbor experienced some of these water surges and received some minor damage. The Leo Robbins Community Sailing Center’s facilities and equipment were among those damaged. Several of our boats received varying degrees of hull damage, and our dock took a beating.
The dock and equipment underwent some repairs to correct the most immediate and dangerous concerns; however, we have lived with some of this damage for the past two and a half years while repair plans have been arranged and budgeted for.
The plans are set to be finalized this September or October, and repairs are scheduled to begin shortly after. Of note, during these repairs, the pieces of our dock that were broken off will be replaced, and we will be receiving a new boathouse.
